Postural Assessments
Your posture determines how you position your body when you are lying down, sitting, standing, or moving. Having proper posture allows your spine, joints, and muscles to synchronise comfortably as they move.
Everyone has their own natural posture alignment, but when this equilibrium is disturbed, the likelihood of muscle fatigue or tissue disruption increases. Poor posture or prolonged postures ultimately lead to more aches and pains, difficulty moving, or even a process where the body is worn down toward a slow paralysis.
To put you on a better path, your therapist will examine your posture in different situations and introduce you to different habits and workouts that can help keep your body in a healthy position. A postural assessment can identify the individual areas contributing to your discomfort, and guide you toward a plan for improvement.
Soon you will be routinely practising healthy positions, ridding yourself of the negative habits. As this happens, your muscles and joints will work together more smoothly, reducing your chances of injury.
How is posture analysed?
Postural assessment can include observation of your standing posture, gait analysis on how you walk or run, and musculoskeletal testing while you perform different tasks. This process helps the therapist identify the root of the issue. This identification may also reveal whether your body movements have changed as a result of injury.
Other factors contributing to poor body alignment may include the placement and condition of your lower limbs. For example, if your feet or ankles suffer from weakness and limited mobility, your overall posture could be impaired. These and other observations may be made during the assessment, alongside recommended adjustments.
How is it useful?
Poor posture contributes to joint and muscle pain, including spinal misalignment that can lead to other complications. Good posture comes from understanding why your current body positioning and alignment have been adversely affecting you.
An assessment can support proper body alignment, preventing spinal injury and relieving pain in the back, knees, and feet. You may also notice reduced muscle fatigue, joint surface degradation, and overall bodily stress.
If your daily routines entail minimal movement such as sitting behind a computer for long periods of time, or participating in physically demanding jobs or sports, a healthy posture will significantly reduce the likelihood of pain or injuries over time.
Your therapist will help you interact more gracefully with your surroundings, while teaching you valuable exercise and stretching techniques to maintain good inner balance.
What happens after assessment?
You will receive a treatment plan which includes personalised exercises to promote your strength, agility and stability. These posture realignment techniques can be adjusted depending on the setting, such as during work, sport, or leisure periods.
Various mobilisation and manipulation methods may also be prescribed to help prevent future injury.
