Vertigo Assessment & Treatment

These sessions help diagnose and overcome any symptoms related to vertigo. This condition is associated with dizziness, but also follows from underlying causes that need to be addressed.

Patients with vertigo typically feel light-headed, or experience a spinning sensation, as if the surrounding environment is moving independently even while they themselves are sitting still. Episodes are unpredictable in length, and patients may also suffer from nausea and vomiting.

This condition can originate naturally or through injury. It is often related to inner ear irregularities, neurological conditions, central nervous system problems, spinal issues, stress from visual stimuli, or medical prescriptions.

Who should undergo vertigo assessment and treatment?

Vertigo is often linked to the inner ear and the vestibular nerve. If you have related conditions such as a recent illness, increases in stress, migraines, head or ear injury, tumours or inner-ear infections, or have had surgery affecting these areas, there is a significant likelihood that these conditions are related to your symptoms of vertigo.

Additional symptoms indicating vertigo include vision disturbances, irregular sweating, difficulty walking, impaired balance, , irregular rapid eye movement, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting.

This condition is extremely troublesome and can hinder your ability to perform your daily routines. If the above description applies to you, we recommend seeking professional assistance.

Undergoing professional vertigo assessment and treatment is the best way to overcome these conditions along with its direct and indirect effects. Professional support and medication can reduce symptoms for those affected, and you may feel additional relief if you are able to spend time in a comfortable environment free from standard triggers such as loud noises, bright lights, or crowds.

What is involved in vertigo assessment and treatment?

You will need to provide as much detail as possible before you participate, as the therapist needs to know the details of your symptoms and what causes them to trigger and worsen. The therapist will ask a range of other questions as well, to better determine the best treatment solution for you.

Additional evaluation from your registered physician may be needed, following the initial assessment. In most cases, however, our therapists will be able to diagnose and treat vestibular conditions (balance and gravitational stability) using specialised tests and methods.

How does treatment work?

Since vertigo accompanies a variety of causes and symptoms, the recommended treatment will depend on your specific diagnosis. However, therapeutical sessions typically involve precise exercises and home exercise prescription for your head and vision.

Other approaches use equipment such as a metronome. In these types of sessions, the therapist will help you maintain focus on a target, such as a paper on the wall. You will then rotate your head in at specified directions, angles, and speeds using the metronome. We then adjust the speed according to your progress – increasing gradually from slow to more rapid movements, and aimed specifically towards the direction that is causing you the most problems. The therapist will also show you how to do these exercises at home, letting you further hasten your path to recovery.

The aim of this evaluation and treatment is to get you back on your feet and retain your daily activities, while at the same time teaching you to manage your vertigo independently.
